Elder Joseph B. Swank, residing near Elmdale, died of consumption Friday morning at the age of 65 years. On the same day and a few hours earlier occurred the death of his youngest daughter, Mary, aged 30. Her ailment was lung fever. The double funeral took place on Sunday from Shawnee Church three miles northwest of Newtown, conducted by Elder John L. Miller, Old School Baptist Church - kbz

The saddest thing that has happened in the neighborhood was the death of Joseph Swank and his daughter, both of the same day. She departed this life last Friday morning at 8 o'clock the 18 (? that's what it says?) and he expired at 11 o'clock. Joseph Swank was born in Butler County, Ohio in 1829, he died January the 18, 1895, age 65 years. He was a good citizen and neighbor and an everyday Christian. He united a good many years agi with the predestrian Baptist Church two miles west of Newtown, he also has been a preacher of that faith. For several years he was a faithful member of this church. He had no fears of death, he said he was only waiting till the summons called him home. He married Hettie Stevens for his first wife and there was born to them two sons and two daughters, the boys are William and John, the girls Sarah and Mary. He was married to his second wife Mary Cox in 1885. She survies. The disease that took him away was that dreaded destroyer, consumption. He and his daughter were laid at rest in the cemetery two miles west of Newtown. The funeral was preached by Elder John Miller of Waynetown. The bereaved family hav ethe sympathy of this vicinity. His pall bearers were Allen Moore, Ralph VanCleave, John Miller, Irve Hutchison, Sant Vancleave and Dan Hauk.
Mary Swank was born the year of 1856 and departed this life Jan 18, 1895 age 38. She died of brain fever. She was unconscious for a day or two before she died and was not a member of any church, but had expressed to her friends that she had a hope in Christ. It was a sad thing to see a father and daughter taken away only 8 hours between them and to see two hearses at one house. Brown & Birdsel of Waynetown were the undertakers. Her pall bearers were Misses Emma Moore, Sat Hauk, ANnie Giff, Bessie Coons, Girtie Harlow and Miss Minnie VanCleave. - kbz

The saddest thing that has happened in this neighborhood for some time was the death of Uncle Joseph Swank and daughter on last Friday morning. Death came to her at 3 o’clock and he expired at 11 o’clock, there being only eight hours between their deaths.
Uncle Joe was a good citizen, a kind father and a Christian, one who lived his religion every day. He was born in Butler County, Ohio, in 1829 and departed this life January 18, 1895, aged 65 years. He was married to Hettie Stevens for his first wife. To them was born two sons and two daughters. The boys are William and John, the girls Sarah and May. He was married to his second wife, Miss Mary Cox, in 1885. She still survives him.
He had no fear of death. He said he was only waiting for the Lord to call him home. When they told him his daughter was dead he said he wished he could go too, so they could be buried together. His wish was granted. He united with the Old Baptist Church at Newtown a good many years ago. He had also been ordained a preacher of that faith for several years. He has always been a faithful member to his church.
It was a sad sight to see two hearses at the same house. Their funerals were preached by Elder John Miller, of Waynetown, on last Sunday at Big Shawnee Church, two miles west of Newtown. Their remains were laid at rest in the cemetery close to the church. The pall bearers were Daniel Hauk, Ralph Vancleave, Irvin Hutchison, Jont Vancleave, John Miller and Allen Moore. The bereaved wife and children have the sympathy of the entire community.
Mary Swank was born in 1856 and departed this life Jan. 18, 1895, aged 38 years. She was unmarried. She has never united with any church, but had expressed herself to some of her friends as having a hope in Christ. She leaves many friends who mourn her loss. Her pall bearers were Misses Gertie Harlow, Sat Hank, Annie Goff, Emma Moore, Bessie Coons and Minnie Vancleave.
